I largely agree with this, but I have seen "I wish more people would read/review/whatever my work," pulled off successfully. In order to do it, though, you have to hit the right tone of wistful, a longing for something totally out of your control, that you in no way deserve, the way that high school girls wish a particular cute boy would notice them.
