I noticed that too, my second time through when I actually knew what was really going on in that scene. There's also the part when they actually get into town and Seph's all "don't you have family here? you should go see them". So yeah, it's obvious he cares about the grunts. (That's also one of my "HERP DERP SOMETHIN WAS GOING ON" things cause it's like, why would he know a lowly MP has family in this podunk town?)
