So you know those shadow wraith people? These guys?
Ruling out pareidolia and mind flailies of a normal sort and assuming they're paranormal for reals - I do not think they are out to getcha face.
I think it's the opposite. And given the confirmation I've felt from certain uh - Sources -
Hear me out, I'll explain.
They look like something that is a hybrid of our primal hindbrain fears and our childhood nightmares. A black flitty wispy strange thing out the corners of our eyes - and sometimes THEY have eyes, and red ones! Almost everyone I know had bad dreams about that kind of thing as a kid. Why is that? Well, some of it is cultural - red eyed spooky things figure in a lot of horror.
Red eyes, though - when you consider 'why red' you come to the fact that big predatory things can have red eyeshine at night. TAPETUM LUCIDUM FOR THE WIN. So what we have is a shape we cannot quite see, but it can see US and it is LOOKING AT US and oh fuck oh fuck oh FUCK. As for the shadow - a shadow means something is there because something has to CAST IT. So we are seeing the shadow OF something, or we are seeing something that is hiding in a shadow. Both of these set off alarm bells in the lizard brain: OH FUCK BIG FREAKY THING WITH BIG FREAKY TEETH RUN RUN RUN RUN NOW.
When you consider the other shape they take it gets even more interesting. Sometimes they look human; often they look like a human dressed a certain way. Specifically they look like the silhouette of someone on a fedora-type hat and a trenchcoat. Consider the cultural associations of this. Someone dressed like that is going to twig us as
1) An authority figure, in which case we want to leave so we don't get arrested or something, or
2) a criminal, in which case we want to run so we don't get fucking shot.
This is an anachronistic image, the Bogey Guy (or the mean cowboy bastard in the dark hat), but it's one so ingrained in our culture that it still means something. It's become pastiche or cliche, but it's an iconic image that most people would be familiar with.
I've heard recent stories where they have a 'TV static' or 'glitchy' look and I can't help but think of Ringu when I hear that. Again, I think it's a conscious appearance.
One would think that a malevolent being would want to draw us in to do worse things to us; from what I've heard of dick ghosts, they tent to be lurky and subtle or else they're like otaku creepers. These things though - they instill immediate apprehension and dread.
It's as if they were DESIGNED to be frightening. They hit on so many cultural 'oh SHIT' notes that it becomes too coincidental.
Every time I hear about these things, they're always being deliberately scary. I have never heard of them doing permanent harm. You get the cold patches and the pinching, and some people have dicked up their ankles running from them, but the being itself seems to lurk or tweak people with the intent of being terrifying and making people want to RUN.
These beings are, I think, the energy/spiritual equivalent of Gandalf's YOU SHALL NOT PASS. They show up in places that feel creepy but that people go into anyhow; they scare people out quickly. If they wanted to do harm, surely they WOULD; they don't.
But what's in the places they are guarding might.
These guys are aetherial beefy security guards with mirror shades XD
They look terrifying but they do that on purpose. Like - if something is nailing SO MANY cultural OH FUCK notes, and it's lurking like Al Capone's runaway shadow or flying around giving you The Eye like Dark Lich after one too many beers...
It's too coincidental. XD
These beings are scary as fuck but likely not a danger to you unless you are runnin' blind. They're a sign that something out there cares about our foolish asses, and as much as I'd probably PEE if I met one - their existence doesn't scare me.
So, yeah. That's my hypothesis. I could be out of my tree, but every story I've heard is 'FUCK IT WAS SCARY; IT DID THE SINISTER ICY HAND OF DEATH AND I RAN THE FUCK AWAY MAN' and no outright attacks with intent to harm.
And. Well. Like I said, the confirmations I've gotten, I cannot ignore. XD; They're from Sources way wiser than me.
So yeah. I dunno. Just me thinking in text.

Date: 2010-04-29 10:34 pm (UTC)I was talking about this with m'friend Frank and he pointed out more cool stuff: the cultural image of black-robed death-associated things being as old as the plague (monks giving last rites for one), the tie-in of the classic black executioner's hood, the flying sheet ghost things in Night on Bald Mountain, the fedora image being reinforced by Dark City - hell, GAINAX may have been playing into the staicky-shadow image when they designed the Hanrasen-zoku in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.
These are well known cultural images over here and I keep thinking it is way too serendipitous that these things should fit so many criteria for AHMAHGAHD.

Date: 2010-04-29 10:37 pm (UTC)Makes me wonder if the executioner's hood doesn't reflect it because of humanity's subconscious associations.
I wonder if the guy-in-fedora image is related to the men-in-black phenom in some way as well?

Date: 2010-04-30 03:31 am (UTC)The keeping people out of dead places thing makes sense. I wonder if there's any correlation between the sate of the building and the presence of a 'sentinel'? If it's unused or in disrepair then it could be said to be 'dead' in that its original purpose isn't there any more.
Although a lot of steam tunnels and junk still get used - XD; I dunno.
I just figured they were looking scary to keep people's foolish asses out of trouble. I'm not sure what beyond that.
The fedora-MIB connection is one I am kinda suprised I didn't think of given my LOLXFILESFAN past XD
