VAST IST DAS? I think it's TENEBROUS-VERSE CRACK!

Oh lordie!

LOOK, ELEMENTAL PHYSICS

HOKAY. SO. Here's the dealio with the universe Ten' takes place in. This first paragraph happened. Idiot tried to control the light - a primary/high element - and screw'd up the natural balance such that the light gone and ate things. Yes, there are light-based 'heartless' creatures in this universe. No Jan asn't halucinating when he said he saw Riskbreakers turn into will o' wisp things after one too many freaky-deaky key applications. Hearts in the Ten'verse exist in equilibrium. They're like the tài jí tú. Too much of one thing or the other and you horf up the innate balance of things and risk critical failure of heart-and-body unitedness. In either case, bad shit happens, and you have people turning into little squeaky things what go *chomp*. Not a lot of fun.

When Tenebrous begins the balance is tipping too far into the light. This is why you have shadow-elemental beasties actively hunting humans - they're being starved out. In the world of balance (this world - yes, I am 'breaking' KH's cosmos and saying THIS is the world between and that light and dark are different realms), the purest light and purest darkness are found inside the hearts of people. So that's what's gone after. I think that in making contact with such a heart, a heartless being upsets the balance so that another heartless being is born but I'm still not entirely clear on the process. It's not exactly the same as is KH proper. XD I'm such a diiiiick.

THE KEYBLADE WAR

It's often hypersimplified into a black/white dark/light them/us evil/good shebang, and - this is inaccurate. Depending on the culture you're dealing with, dark might be privileged or light might be; in Ivalice, it varies, but in Valendia it's definitely the latter and people who look on the Dark as anything but DOOM are actively harassed. Unfortunately this harassment intersected with some pretty manky racism, as the Kildean community in Valendia were prone to revering the Lady of the Dark and we can see where this is going. This is the environment in which Jan, Roméo, Ashley, Sydney, Tieger, Neesa, Griss, Duane, Sam, Callo, and to a lesser degree Ansem and Xenos (the Bastion is neutral and hippie ish but they dealt with Valendia a lot soooo) grew up. If you were mixed blood you tried to hide it like Roméo or you risked active bullshittery. The fact that Neesa made it as far as she did without bothering to do anything with her hair or her complexion speaks VOLUMES about how much of a badass she is.

But I digress. The factions that were involved in the war ranged all over the light/dark scale and all up and down the decent/jackass scale. Some were milintants intent on stomping out the other element for good; some fought to preserve the balance. There were light/dark alliances. The Keyblade War was, in essence, about a group trying to do exactly what the floating continent civilization did - control and command the light. Fearing another disasterpiece, or wanting the power for themselves, or - yeah, everyone had a different motive and EVERYONE mobilized when the first grab for the control of Light happened. Unfortunately, the Princesses of Heart aligned with Light got yanked into this, and though none of them DIED a lot of them endured a lot of stupid.

FACTIONS I AM AWARE OF

Paladins of the Night: Dark/Relaxed. Largely Kildean. Revere Lady of Dark. HUGE group. Defended one of the Princesses when she sought sanctuary from a militant Light group. Tended to scare the dickens out of people because they went around in black robes and a lot of them had luminous eyes from initiation to the Dark. Upheld the values of their beliefs (compassion, wisdom, courage, discretion, sharing of knowledge).

Order of the Silver Moon: Light/Relaxed. Based their philosophy on the life of a particular Baronian paladin. Believe in forgiveness, acceptance, rehabilitation of the jerky, etc. Another huge group. HIPPIES! Well kinda. Large Cetrain percentage in here too. Many Lunarians.

Hashshashin: Dark/Relaxed but very VERY secretive and suspected of all kinds of batfuck skullduggery. Thaeron is one, and indeed was a leader of one sub-group. Masters of decisive strikes, mindscrew-with-intent, and usually were missing left ringfinger. Became known for always having a particular kind of ration on hand: a really simple cake. If one of these was left with a dagger by someone's pillow, that person would usually run howling. Revered all Ladies but considered Lady of Dark their matron goddess, with Lady of Light a close second. Were based in a desert but no one knew WHERE. Incidentally, the Riskbreaker order was originally based on the Hashshashin path, but over time it got sort of degraded and the Riskbreakers lost its centre and honour.

Harbingers of the White Flame: Light/Militant. Meant well but caused a lot of problems and scared the shit out of a particular Princess. Were based in Valendia, particularly in Valnain. Infamous fr having lost an entire platoon behind the Door to the Dark when a paladin attempted to elope with the Princess he thought he'd fallen in love with. She bailed through a corridor and he tried to follow and vanished.

Crimson Blades: Light/Semi-militant. Did not travel; they were Valendia's homeland defense. Roméo Guildenstern was a prominent member (and he took pains to hide his mixed blood - that's why his beard was dark, he used to dye it and his hair but during the Greylands/Lea Monde incident he forgot about this entirely on account of because he went crazy) though he was one long after the war. Other members: Duane and Grissom MacDiarmaid, Samantha Melfi, Neesa and Tieger (I'll figure out their surnames SOMEDAY *huff*). Began as an order of paladintemplar types but, like the Riskbreakers, got caught up in political machinations. Were particularly susceptible to this on account of the fact that the heard of the church, Cardinal Batistum (there were multiple Batistums, and though they claimed to be descendants they looked uncannily alike), was corrupt and not at all what he seemed to be.

Hand of the Black Lotus: Dark/VERY militant. These guys were kind of batshit insane. They were working to eradicate any and all light, and conquer any Light worlds. Oddly, though, they would not consider killing the Princesses, preferring to attempt to convert them. really the princesses were the only ones this group was at all respectful toward; they were dreadfully strict about training and quick to punish. Their leader was well known for being heartstoppingly beautiful, an utter genius, and fucking crazy. After the war he disappeared.

Sol Ignis: Light/VERY militant; this is the predecessor to the group of literally heart-broken Crimson Blade survivors who attacked Ansem eventually (note that these guys didn't die, but were imprisoned and rehabbed). The group was much larger during the war, and the members received risky alchemical treatments with pure elemental light. Their members had a scary habit of randomly becoming Wisps in battle.

The Rose and Staves: Neutral/Relaxed. This is a rough translation! Had members in many worlds; acted as border guards. Had a policy of 'don't proselytize, just be philosophical and share your tea'. Were highly trained in healing arts.

I know there are more groups - there was a Chaos-based one out of Vector and a staunch Order-based one as well, and there were even Void agents spotted - but those are all the ones I know thus far.

BLARGH BLARGH my train of thought was sat upon by a Largebody I'll write more later XD

RANDOM THINGIES:
-A lot of Princesses are also Sorceresses.
-Müllenkamp was an incarnation of the Lady of Dark; she doesn't walk the wheel much as her shiny sis does.
-One of the Princesses was likely Lady of Light's then-incarnation.
-Princessness is inherited - usually through a dream is how this happens.

I like how you're hinting at recasting both Snow White and Sleeping Beauty as older-sorceress-vs-younger-sorceress conflicts.
